Notes from June Meetup

Written by Shane Sevo. Posted in Latest

At the last meetup Dan Harkey discussed and demonstrated the following applications.

Fabrik

Fabrik is the open source Joomla application builder component. Fabrik gives you the power to create forms and tables that run inside Joomla. We demonstrated how to create a spread sheet with calculations and a form to collect the information. There is a learning curve for the more advance features, but for simple forms you can be up and running in no time.Currently available for Joomla 15 and they are working on Joomla 16. http://fabrikar.com

Image mapping using Gimp

Joomla has an extension called "htmlmap" for Joomla 15 and as an alternative for Joomla 16 we demonstrated how to do an Image Map using Gimp. An image map is a graphic that contains hotspots that link to URLs.  They are used as a means to give a web designer greater design flexibility in that they can insert links almost in any place they desire. A good tutorial can be found here: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-image-map-gimp

Alternative to Jsecure- adding a layer of security

For those of you that use jsecure, who now has gone commercial, we demonstrated an alternative called "adminexile". Like jsecure, but without all the features of Jsecure, adminexile will add an access key to the end of the URL which will redirect wrong entries to the homepage or any other page without ever seeing the administrator login panel. http://www.richeyweb.com/development/joomla-plugins/71-adminexile-for-joomla-16

KoolMoves

KoolMoves is a program for creating web animations, using tools to work with Flash and animated GIF files. The program can apply different effects to text, import vector graphics, add audio, carry out a gradient fill to create a curve, assign  different action buttons and images. This program is very simple to operate, even without the ability to work with Flash, you can create excellent videos that can be used as banners, creating a multimedia slide show, creating a system of navigation through the site and much more. At a cost of $49 for all the features, the program is well worth it. http://www.koolmoves.com

If you have any questions, please post them on the meetup discussion board.

Breezing Forms

Written by Administrator. Posted in Latest

box_1.7.2_big.pngI believe Breezing forms is a fork of another (older) popular forms component for Joomla! called Facile Forms. Breezy and Easy were some of my initial reasons for tying out this form component.  But in the long run it is the powerful custom form building controls and scripting options that make this form component stand out from the competition.  Build complex multi-page forms from within Joomla! using Breezing forms.

View Breezing froms in the JED

Developer website, Crosstec.de

When you purchase a subscription to Breezing forms, you aslo get access to the xforms and Jollom components. Xforms is a component that lets you build custom views of form submissions on the front and backend of Joomla! and Jollom is an advanced spam control tool that lets you control how each field is treated.

CloudFlare

cloudflare-logo.png Problem: You have a slow site...

You Have Tried: asking your hosting company to speed things up, turned on caching in Joomla!, optimized everything you know how to, turned off everything you don't need...

It Is Still Slow: So now what? Well you may be looking at switching hosts or upgrading your hosting plan or server power.

Well, before you go through the trouble of that next step... you may want to try a service like CloudFlare.  They make many boasts about increasing speed without any complicated upgrades or tempermental server based caching solutions.  It is all handled through DNS, watch their video and you will get the idea...

Not only do you get your site cached for a speed boost, but you get bad guy filtering at the IP level and some pretty cool analytics to boot.

MailChimp... FREE!

Written by Administrator. Posted in Latest

mailchimp_logo.png

As an example of some of the quality information that is available from the Joomla! Detroit community (thanks Brent! ) at each meetup; how about this... use MailChimp for your e-mail marketing for free if you have a user list of under 1000 members.  For many small businesses, non-profit organizations, and user groups (like us) this makes for a really great free tool.

I will be switching over the Joomla! Detroit newsletter to this new free service from iContact .  I will certainly save some money in the process and perhaps discover a superior tool, so far I am pretty impressed.

Get a free account...

  • 1000 Subscribers
  • 6000 / e-mails a month
  • No credit cards or any of that jazz...
