A few people have been asking about Joomla! 1.6 over the past few meetups. I have been pointing people to a few online resources for info about the development path where there are some predictions about the first stable release. If you can't wait and you want to play around with an alpha install. I have done one, and I will create an admin login for anyone that wants to play around... just register and e-mail me.
